68 Members of Parliament Use AI for Speeches
Recent research by De Groene Amsterdammer and Investico has revealed that 68 of the 150 members of parliament delivered speeches last year that were largely written by AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude. MPs indicate that they primarily use this technology to simplify texts and reduce their workload. This was reported by NOS on October 21, 2026.
The researchers used the Pangram program to analyze the debates of all MPs for specific phrasing patterns typical of chatbots. It is important to note that the actual number of MPs using AI is likely higher, as contributions that consisted of less than 50 percent AI text were not included in the count.
AI usage in the House of Representatives varies significantly between political parties. Particularly right-wing factions such as the PVV and Group Markuszower make notable use of AI, while parties like the SP, Party for the Animals, and Volt hardly use it at all. Prominent users include former MP Lahlah (Pro) and Van Meetelen (PVV), who are said to use AI to translate citizen stories into clear contributions.
The BBB refers to AI as a normal tool, especially considering the limited number of members who have much work to do. For instance, faction leader Henk Vermeer indicates that about 30 percent of their contributions come from AI applications. On the other hand, the CDA is working on guidelines for responsible AI usage, with MP Krul stating that he uses AI to shorten texts without losing essential content. The application of AI appears particularly popular in committee debates, where more than half of the presented texts may have been generated by AI.
