AI photos on Thuisbezorgd: risks and responsibilities

Thuisbezorgd has recently taken a closer look at the role of AI photos in their offering of dish photos. A recent analysis shows that large chains like McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC do not have any AI photos of their dishes on the platform, while local grill rooms like Kebab House, Lezzet Grillroom, and Erol Döner do apply this. This situation raises questions about the transparency and reliability of these photos, especially in the context of consumer decisions.

In some offers on Thuisbezorgd, it is indicated that the photo is AI-generated. It seems that a gray label is placed on these images to warn consumers. However, critics, including rapper Post Malone, argue that a label alone is insufficient to properly inform consumers about what they actually receive. The problem remains that AI images do not provide a reliable representation of the dish, which can lead to misleading information.

Various restaurants on Thuisbezorgd seem to be riding the wave of AI benefits, despite the fact that there are also solutions, such as using phone cameras for simple, affordable photos of real dishes. This is seen as a better option than using AI photos, which are sometimes taken from general databases and therefore not representative of the offerings in the specific dining establishment.

Furthermore, new regulations have been in effect since August 2, 2026, requiring transparency regarding the use of AI in advertising and publicity. This means that if images are created using AI, they must be labeled as such. However, Thuisbezorgd's current approach is seen by many as inadequate. The call for clarity and more reliability is growing, and there are arguments for a ban on AI photos, as previously implemented by the Indian delivery service Zomato, which has led to fewer complaints and misunderstandings.
