AI subscriptions become more expensive, entry price remains the same
The prices for AI subscriptions have increased in recent years, despite the entry price for the most basic variant remaining around 20 dollars. However, the most expensive subscription, ChatGPT Pro, has dramatically risen from 20 dollars to 500 dollars per month. This reflects a larger trend in which price listings from other AI providers, such as Claude and Google, have also surged to exorbitant heights. This development is accompanied by increasing restrictions on the use of AI, forcing users to look for cheaper or alternative options.
Jesse Commandeur, freelance SEO specialist, has analyzed the price increases of various AI tools. His research shows that the average price of the most expensive subscriptions among six large-scale providers has risen from 18 to 233 dollars per month, with an average increase of 26 percent for existing software since the introduction of AI features. Additionally, users are finding it more challenging to actively utilize their subscriptions, as evidenced by a significant increase in searches about canceling AI subscriptions in the Netherlands.
The rising costs are driven by a combination of factors, including increasing computing power prices and a heightened demand for premium AI features. Companies like Microsoft and Google are raising their subscription costs in conjunction with offering AI integrations, which raises the overall costs even as the basic features remain the same. This phenomenon, referred to as AI shrinkflation, means that users are now getting less value for their money. Limits and credits have now become the norm in almost every application, requiring users to pay extra if they exceed these limits.
It is clear that the AI market is splitting into different price tiers, with premium AI becoming increasingly expensive while cheaper options and ad-supported free versions remain available. Prices may continue to increase until 2029, depending on demand for powerful AI and the presumed scarcity of necessary hardware. For users, it is becoming increasingly important to look not only at the monthly price but also at the actual value they receive for their subscription.
