Anthropic launches Claude Haiku 5.5: faster and cheaper
Anthropic has recently launched Claude Haiku 5.5, an improved AI model focused on speed and cost savings. According to the announcement, the model costs on average about 75 percent less to operate than its predecessor, Haiku 4.5. This makes it particularly attractive for applications such as customer service, where rapid responses and efficient information processing are crucial.
Haiku 5.5 is immediately available on popular cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. The model excels in tasks such as summarization and classification, which is ideal for companies that process a large volume of customer inquiries. It also offers capabilities for live customer service and can be deployed as a supportive AI agent in programming tasks.
A notable feature of Haiku 5.5 is the adjustable 'effort' mode, which allows users to control the level of effort the model dedicates to a task. This enables companies to choose between a lower cost setting for simple tasks and a more intelligent output for more complex analyses. This makes the model particularly flexible for a variety of applications, especially for requests under 100,000 tokens.
Additionally, Anthropic has announced that the costs for reusing stored inputs with Sonnet 5.5 will also be reduced, making the model even more competitive for long-duration tasks. These changes are especially beneficial for organizations that regularly delegate similar tasks to the AI. However, it remains important to evaluate the actual performance and quality of the results before fully transitioning to the new model.
