Anthropic considers AI release in competition with OpenAI
Anthropic is contemplating launching a new AI model on September 19, 2026, in an attempt to compete with OpenAI. The pressure on the company is increasing, particularly due to the recent release of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, which now represents about 13 percent of business AI spending. In comparison, Anthropic's Claude Fable has a market share of approximately 8 percent. This situation raises questions among investors about Anthropic's ability to maintain its edge in the business AI space.
The shift in developer preference is also evident on platforms like OpenRouter, where users are investing more in OpenAI models than in those from Anthropic for the first time in over two and a half years. This trend underscores the urgency for Anthropic to reassess its strategic choices and respond to the growing competitive pressure from OpenAI.
In addition to the increasing market pressure, CEO Dario Amodei has called on the AI industry to slow down the development of new capabilities due to safety risks. He asserts that the safety of the new model needs to be investigated, which could complicate the decision to move forward with a release. The risk of a hasty launch that contradicts the company's internal guidelines weighs heavily, especially as the pressure to compete with OpenAI intensifies.
Furthermore, Anthropic is preparing for a potential IPO, which adds additional pressure to the pace and cost of product development. Companies are carefully scrutinizing profitability, and spending on research and computing power must align with investor expectations. Despite the fact that Anthropic currently generates higher revenue than OpenAI, there is growing concern that this advantage could be quickly lost. The upcoming decisions will be crucial in determining Anthropic's strategic direction in this rapidly evolving market.
