Smartphones and Water Damage: Considerations

Modern smartphones are equipped with varying degrees of water resistance, such as the IP68 rating, which ensures that devices can survive for half an hour at a depth of 1.5 meters. This seems like an ideal feature for users wanting to take their smartphone along during water-related activities, such as showering. However, the reality is that submerging a smartphone in water, even with such a rating, carries significant risks.

The companies Apple, Google, and Samsung have jointly issued a warning about using smartphones in humid environments, with an emphasis on bathrooms. Despite smartphones being designed to withstand contact with water, the combination of steam and other factors in a bathroom can lead to damage to the devices. So carrying your smartphone into the shower for some music or streaming is a bad idea.

Technical experts point out that water-resistant enclosures do not always guarantee waterproofness. With prolonged exposure to moderate humidity conditions, such as those in a bathroom, micro-cracks or other damage to the internal components can occur. This can lead to reduced performance or even complete failure of the device.

To prevent damage, manufacturers advise against taking devices into the bathroom. Instead, it is recommended to use alternative solutions, such as a Bluetooth speaker designed for bathroom use. This way, one can enjoy the desired music without the risk of damaging their valuable smartphone.
