Battle over AI regulations between Bernie Sanders and NYC DSA
The New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and Senator Bernie Sanders are engaged in a heated debate over the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). This tension surfaced on September 18 in Washington and New York, where activists and policymakers outlined their priorities within the AI discussion. While the DSA emphasizes addressing immediate harms such as surveillance and job loss, Sanders also points to existential risks and the need for regulation for the future.
The DSA launched a strong message against so-called AI alarmism by sharing an Instagram carousel that criticized the exaggeration of AI risks. The post, which included an image of an ouroboros, garnered over 25,000 likes and elicited mixed reactions. While some commentators criticized the DSA for a dangerous stance, others supported their desire to raise alarms about the damage AI is currently causing. Additionally, concerns from the tech community about the reliability of major tech companies in terms of self-regulation have emerged.
Senator Sanders has prominently placed AI safety on the agenda, linking his concerns about job loss and the threats of AI to his opposition to the construction of data centers. With a moratorium legislation, he seeks a pause in construction, tied to a call for federal regulation to protect the future of humanity. This approach has led to a variety of responses within the leftist political space, where some voices advocate focusing on immediate harms, while others call for a broader view on the risks of AI.
The discussion about which AI regulations should take priority is growing more urgent. Activists within the DSA are advocating for “comprehensive AI and tech regulations” at all levels of government. Work is underway on a resolution to support Sanders' bill that aims to ban superintelligence. While public opinion suggests that a significant portion of Americans are concerned about the dangers of AI, the outcome of this discussion could be pivotal for both the political and technological future in the U.S.
