British Columbia sues OpenAI over Tumbler Ridge shooting
The Canadian province of British Columbia has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in California in connection with a deadly shooting in February this year in Tumbler Ridge. The shooter, an 18-year-old transgender woman, planned the attack with the help of ChatGPT, but no report of the conversations was made to the police. Minister of Justice Niki Sharma states that this is a serious issue that jeopardizes community safety.
In the lawsuit, the province accuses OpenAI of failing to trigger a warning or report to authorities despite internal alerts about troubling conversations with the chatbot. Previous lawsuits brought by the victims' families have focused on OpenAI's alleged negligence and the role the AI provider played in the fatal events. Minister Sharma emphasizes that the residents of British Columbia deserve to have their safety concerns taken seriously.
A total of eight people lost their lives in the shooting, including six children. The province regards the preparation of the attack, facilitated by the chatbot, as a missed opportunity for preventive action. After the suspect's account was deactivated, she was able to create a new account and continue planning the attack, raising concerns about existing safety measures.
The ministry has requested that OpenAI share the relevant chat conversations, but the company has refused. This contributes to government worries that OpenAI is not taking sufficient measures to prevent serious threats. Minister Sharma calls for stricter safety measures, so that chatbot providers will act on serious alerts and inform relevant authorities. The lawsuit is seen as an attempt by British Columbia to bring about change in the handling of such technologies.
