UK government invests 600 million pounds in AI protection

The UK government has announced a funding package of approximately 600 million pounds aimed at protecting against health and safety risks arising from artificial intelligence (AI). This amount, which is equivalent to about 800 million dollars, will be used for establishing a new biosecurity laboratory, ensuring digital security of essential infrastructure, and promoting research into safe AI applications.

A key component of this initiative is the new AI Biosecurity Lab, for which 100 million pounds has been reserved. This laboratory aims to use AI to detect biological threats. Additionally, 65 million pounds has been allocated for developing countermeasures against pathogens. The UK's AI Minister, Kanishka Narayan, has indicated that the laboratory should evolve into an international organization that pools scientific expertise to ensure societal safety.

In addition to investments in biosecurity, there is also a significant financial injection for cyber defense. The existing AI Security Institute will receive an additional 120 million pounds, and two new projects are being launched: the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre, which will jointly receive 130 million pounds. The goal is to strengthen the digital protection of vital infrastructure and the broader economy, with additional resources for the National Cyber Security Centre in Manchester.

The investment package also includes 60 million pounds for robotics and autonomous systems, and another 60 million pounds in support of AI research and government contracts. Furthermore, a prize fund of 15 million pounds has been established to stimulate AI solutions, with a focus on healthcare. This combined approach of development and protection against the risks of AI reflects a remarkable strategy, with the UK government proactively positioning itself in the debate over the manageability of AI.
