Character.AI files for bankruptcy, Disney as buyer
Character.AI has filed for bankruptcy, shortly after Disney hired former CEO Karandeep Anand. This remarkable news surfaced on October 12, and shortly thereafter, Disney made a bid of $20 million for the company's technology. Just three years ago, Character.AI was valued at one billion dollars, but legal troubles caused the company to face difficulties.
In a brief statement on its own website, Character.AI indicated that it was filing for bankruptcy to be sold under judicial supervision. The company came under pressure due to various lawsuits, including claims from parents of teenagers who had committed suicide after conversations with chatbots. Attempts to implement stricter safety measures, such as age checks and filters, could not prevent the largest user segment, youths, from not generating enough revenue for profitability.
Disney is currently the sole bidder for Character.AI's technology and has confirmed it has no interest in user data. The involvement of Karandeep Anand, who joined Character.AI in June 2025 and transitioned to Disney in September 2026, casts a shadow over the situation. After his swift move, Character.AI filed for bankruptcy just ten days later, and a team of former employees now has to keep the app running until the sale is completed.
While there remains uncertainty about the future of the app, everything remains operational for now. Disney's bid is a starting bid and other interested parties have the opportunity to make higher offers. The judge must ultimately approve the transaction, and Character.AI expects the sale to be finalized by the end of November or early December. However, the future of the app itself is uncertain, as Disney is only interested in the technology.
