Crusoe raises $3.9 billion and accelerates Spark rollout

Crusoe, a developer of data centers, raised $3.9 billion in a Series F funding round on September 17. This funding round has increased the company's valuation to $30.9 billion. Crusoe needs the funding to support existing projects and the scaling of modular AI factories. One of the focal points is a large site in Abilene, Texas, used by OpenAI. In addition, the company is developing portable mini data centers, called Spark, which can quickly provide computing capacity.

The Series F funding was led by Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners, with participation from major names such as Nvidia and Qatar Investment Authority. Crusoe describes this as a significant capital injection that will be used for ongoing data center projects and the initial development of the Spark data centers. These modular centers are designed to be quickly transported and connected to existing power sources, allowing for the deployment of computing capacity without lengthy construction periods.

Additionally, Crusoe has enriched its board with experienced professionals from the cloud and materials industry, including Thomas Seifert from Cloudflare and JB Straubel, the CEO of Redwood Materials. These new appointments may provide valuable insights and networks within the AI infrastructure sector, where the demand for computing capacity is rapidly increasing. Crusoe has optimized its business model by combining three different revenue streams: leasing data center space to clients, renting out its own GPUs, and selling computing capacity for AI applications.

Crusoe serves large clients such as Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle. Furthermore, it recently signed a multi-year contract worth $13 billion with Jane Street for the supply of GPUs and AI infrastructure. This contract highlights the scale at which Crusoe operates and the growing demand for its data center solutions. Additionally, the company is considering a possible IPO, which could contribute to further funding for new data centers and the rollout of its Spark strategy.
