Daniel Roher creates documentary about AI and the future

Director Daniel Roher investigates in his documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist the hopes and dangers that artificial intelligence (AI) brings. After winning an Oscar in 2023 for the film Navalny, Roher turns his attention to a personal question: what world does he leave behind for his unborn child? With a wide range of interviews with tech thinkers, CEOs, and researchers, the film offers a nuanced perspective on both dystopian scenarios and technological breakthroughs.

The documentary alternates studio interviews with home videos of Roher’s pregnant wife and lively illustrations. The first part of the film has a panicked tone, underpinned by ominous music and rapidly edited quotes about the potential dangers of AI. This gloomy atmosphere shifts as optimistic voices emerge, pointing to the more exciting possibilities of the future. One interviewee notes that tomorrow is more exciting than today, which seems to visibly relieve Roher.

Roher has managed to assemble a star-studded guest list, featuring prominent names like Yuval Noah Harari, Ajeya Cotra, and Daniela Amodei. The discussions revolve around the responsibility of these leaders in the context of the AI race, and the dilemmas they face. Altman names the U.S. government as the first responder to a crisis, but his trust in politics is surprisingly positive. The film balances between rosy techno-optimism and anxious doom-thinking, introducing the concept of the 'apocaloptimist' to describe these conflicting feelings.
