Charging station offers financial benefits for EV drivers
Starting in early 2026, Dutch owners of electric vehicles (EVs) can benefit from the ERE scheme (Emission Reduction Units), allowing them to earn money with their home charger. The scheme offers compensation of approximately €0.10 per charged kilowatt-hour (kWh), representing an attractive opportunity for EV drivers. However, there is an important requirement: to qualify for this scheme, a charging station with an official MID-certified meter is necessary.
This requirement poses a dilemma for owners of older charging stations that do not meet the MID standard. For them, a difficult choice is looming: retain the existing charging station without financial benefits or invest in a new charging station that complies with regulations. It is a decision that carries not only financial implications but also strategic considerations, as the energy market and the demand for charging solutions continue to evolve.
The ERE scheme thus makes it possible to generate extra income by charging electric vehicles at home, but transitioning to a certified charging station is a necessary step for those who wish to enjoy these benefits. The money that EV drivers can earn can also help offset the costs of investing in a new charging station, thereby minimizing the long-term financial impact.
Moreover, anticipating future energy needs is of great importance. With the growth of electric vehicles alone in the Netherlands, the demand for reliable and efficient charging solutions is essential for the transition to more sustainable mobility. Therefore, the decision to switch to a MID-certified charging station can not only be financially advantageous but also contribute to broader societal sustainability efforts.
