Three-quarters of employers expect job losses due to AI

Research by employer organization AWVN shows that three-quarters of employers expect artificial intelligence (AI) to lead to job losses in the long term. However, at present, employers do not foresee mass layoffs. AI is currently mainly changing the way of working, with an emphasis on adjusting roles rather than completely replacing them.

Since 2024, the use of AI within companies has nearly doubled. Employees are also increasingly using AI in their private lives, prompting employers to facilitate this use in the workplace as well. The shift in tasks means that employees are performing less operational work and more supervisory work. This indicates a change in the role of employees as AI becomes more integrated into daily tasks.

According to researcher Elvira Kas from AWVN, there is a turning point in how companies apply AI. While only 28% of employers currently expect roles to disappear due to AI, this percentage is projected to rise to three-quarters over the next ten years. However, Kas currently sees no significant downsizing of staff and emphasizes that roles in most sectors are not disappearing en masse.

The impact of AI extends to knowledge-intensive sectors, where employees mostly deal with information and knowledge. Kas emphasizes that not all jobs in these sectors will disappear, but the work will change. This means that employees must adapt to new requirements, such as skills in monitoring AI systems and providing relevant information. The increase of AI in the workplace signifies a shift in the skills needed for future work.
