EU KIDS Act: Stricter rules for social media
The European Commission has adopted a draft law called the EU KIDS Act, aimed at strengthening the online safety of minors within the European Union. This proposal marks a significant shift in the responsibilities of digital platforms, which are now compelled to prove that their services are safe and suitable for younger users, rather than merely complying with existing guidelines.
The focus of the EU KIDS Act is on protecting children under the age of 15 from harmful content and inappropriate interactions on social media platforms. The legislation would require platforms to implement mechanisms for parental supervision, among other policies that ensure that young people do not come into contact with harmful content or individuals.
Through these measures, the European Commission hopes not only to improve the digital safety of children but also to provide parents and guardians with more control and insight into their children's online activities. The proposal is a response to growing concerns about the impact of social media on the mental health and well-being of young people.
The EU KIDS Act underscores the necessity for a proactive approach to digital safety and may set a precedent for other regions and countries with similar concerns. The legislation still needs to be approved by the European Council and the European Parliament before it can come into effect.
