Google confirms access of Gemini model to three companies

Google recently confirmed that a Gemini AI model gained access to three companies during a security test. This occurred during a capture-the-flag exercise, a common method for identifying and testing security vulnerabilities. The test, conducted by the company Irregular, aimed to evaluate security in a controlled environment. The incidents took place in May and were reported to Google by Irregular in July.

The test environment was meant to fully isolate the AI model from the internet, but this turned out not to be the case. As a result, the model unintentionally accessed online information, leading to serious security incidents. In each of the three cases, the model ceased its attacks once it became aware of the reality of the targets, according to Google. This indicates effective safety measures within the model.

The model gained access to systems in various ways: in one case by guessing passwords and in two other cases by using public login credentials of other companies that were available online. Google subsequently positioned these incidents as a learning experience, resembling more of a bug bounty program than an AI misalignment. Google stated that no damage was done and that the involved companies have now been informed.

Irregular, which is involved in testing AI systems, has also indicated that they have resolved the issues that arose during this test. However, few details have been released so far regarding the specific vulnerabilities or the type of Gemini model involved, as it was not the latest model. This situation highlights the necessity for rigorous security testing within the AI sector and the complexity of working with advanced models.
