Google tests buy button for Flipkart in Gemini

In October 2023, Google launched a trial in India testing a buy button for Flipkart in the Gemini and AI mode. During this trial, selected users will see the option to use a 'Buy' button for certain products, such as smartphones and electronics. This allows them to check out directly without leaving the AI interface. The number of users with access to this feature, as well as the products where the button appears, is currently limited.

The trial is not extended to all stores available through the AI services, meaning competitors like Amazon do not offer direct buying options from the AI interface. India, as the second-largest internet market in the world with over a billion users, presents significant potential for e-commerce, especially during the holiday season when companies offer their biggest deals. Google plans for a wider rollout of this feature later in October.

According to a spokesperson for Google, the company is constantly testing new features and experiences to make it easier for consumers to find and interact with businesses. This advancement in technology, illustrated by the introduction of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), enables users to easily purchase products via Gemini and AI Mode.

The trial with Flipkart, which was identified as a partner earlier this year, differs from the previously announced Google checkout, as it brings up the Flipkart brand checkout after pressing the buy button. Google has recently made an investment of approximately $350 million in Flipkart, acquiring a minority stake in the company, highlighting the close collaboration between both companies.
