Grok in your Tesla: Practical Test of the AI Assistant

Tesla's AI assistant Grok, which was introduced earlier, is now available for users. In a recent video from the YouTube channel Zelfrijder, the interaction with Grok during a drive through Urk is tested. The assistant supports functions such as navigation and music playback options, but the overall operation is not always smooth. The driver tested Grok after a software update, asking the assistant for fun destinations and to play music.

During the drive, the driver demonstrates how to communicate with Grok by asking questions about nearby locations and setting navigation. Grok revealed various options after requests for destinations like a gym or car wash. This functionality goes a step further than just providing an address; drivers can indicate what they are looking for, and Grok then offers a selection. The assistant can also add multiple stops to the route, further enhancing the user experience.

However, Grok's speech recognition is not without flaws. The video repeatedly illustrates that the driver had trouble activating the assistant with the phrase 'Hey Grok', sometimes requiring the use of the physical button on the steering wheel. Although Grok can provide numerous answers and even give information about points of interest, the recognition seems to be inconsistent at times. This suggests a stage of development where the technology can still improve.

The video also features humorous interactions where Grok is presented as the car, resulting in funny dialogues but potentially creating some misunderstandings regarding the actual capabilities of the assistant. Tesla mentions that Grok is still in the beta phase. The experience clearly shows that despite the advantages Grok offers, there is also considerable room for improvement. For those interested in the capabilities of the assistant, the video provides a useful first impression.
