Bezos: AI makes a three-day work week possible

Jeff Bezos predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will increase productivity in the economy to such an extent that many families will be able to get by on a three-day work week. During an interview on October 7 with Bret Baier from Fox News, held at his aerospace company Blue Origin, Bezos indicated that this shift will make the dual-income model in many households unnecessary. Consequently, he expects employers to struggle to find workers, contrary to the fear of massive job losses due to AI, which is shared by many employers.

However, Bezos' optimistic vision stands in stark contrast to the reality at Amazon, where around 30,000 office jobs have been eliminated since late 2025. He emphasized that this was not due to AI but to rapid expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, more than 90,000 AI-related layoffs have been reported elsewhere. Despite these figures, Amazon is investing more than $200 billion this year in data infrastructure, leaving the future of AI and employment as a dark ethical issue.

Other top entrepreneurs have also talked about shorter work weeks in the past, such as Nvidia’s Jensen Huang who predicted a four-day work week by 2025. Tesla founder Elon Musk goes even further, suggesting that work may become optional within 10 to 20 years. Nevertheless, these predictions have yet to produce the desired results for many employees, as workloads seem to be increasing with the help of AI.

Reactions on social media, particularly on Reddit, are predominantly skeptical. Many users point out the contradiction in Bezos's predictions, especially considering the recent layoffs at Amazon. Critics wonder why companies would opt for a three-day work week if they can operate five days with fewer employees. In the Netherlands, the average work week is already 32 hours, but this has less to do with AI and more with the choices of families themselves. It remains to be seen who will ultimately benefit from the productivity gains due to AI and whether the promise of a shorter work week will become reality for everyone.
