Prime Minister Jetten Ignores Guidelines on AI Messages
This week, Prime Minister Rob Jetten came under scrutiny for sharing AI-generated messages on his social media, without a clear indication that they are synthetic content. This constitutes a violation of the guidelines set by the Dutch government, which require transparency in the use of generative AI in public communication. The lack of clarity may undermine public trust, especially given the public role of a prime minister.
The Dutch government has established guidelines for the use of generative AI, which state that such media must be recognizable to the public. There must be a visible label or accompanying text to prevent misleading interpretations. This is crucial, particularly for communications disseminated by public figures, as ambiguity regarding the source of information can lead to distrust.
Various regulations, stemming from the GDPR and the new European AI regulation, place the responsibility on governments to provide transparency regarding synthetic content. This means that deepfakes and other AI-generated materials must always be clearly marked. Organizations that fail to comply with these rules may face sanctions, underscoring the need for transparency.
Failing to label AI messages increases the risk of misinformation, especially when it comes to important public communications. Therefore, public statements must be well-documented. This involves not only labels and accompanying texts but also the AI tools used and their settings. Clarity regarding these aspects is essential to comply with the requirements of the AI Act and to ensure public trust.
