Jetten sees no problem with AI texts: ‘Human work’
Prime Minister Rob Jetten recently indicated that texts written by AI, such as those produced by systems like ChatGPT and Gemini, do not undermine the credibility of political communication. According to Jetten, every text is assessed and adjusted by humans, who are responsible for the final content. This response emerged in a discussion about the use of generative AI in politics, where concerns about transparency and trust are central.
Generative AI creates texts and images based on existing information, but Jetten emphasizes that this technology only provides a starting point. He asserts that human oversight is essential to ensure the accuracy of the message and to avoid errors that may occur during busy news periods. His main message is that despite technological advancements, the political message always remains human work.
At the policy level, the Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst and the Ministry of the Interior are working on guidelines for the responsible use of generative AI. These guidelines advise that human editing is always required for documents generated with AI, and that the use of AI in public communication must be clearly communicated. This aligns with the broader necessity for transparency in government communication, especially given the additional risks of social media.
Additionally, the upcoming European AI regulation will impact how governments use AI tools. This legislation requires clear indications when AI-generated content is presented, which should help prevent misinformation and confusion among the public. Jetten warns that without adequate labeling and oversight, there is a risk of deception during elections and in crisis situations. This underscores the importance of human editing and oversight in the use of AI in communication.
Jetten concludes that, while AI can be a valuable tool, responsibility and control must always remain with humans. This approach ensures that citizens can trust the information provided to them and that the integrity of the communication remains assured.
