Microsoft introduces Copilot Code for app development

Microsoft has expanded the Copilot app with a new feature called Copilot Code. This tab allows users to describe in plain language what kind of app, dashboard, or automation they need. Copilot Code then generates these applications without users needing to write any code themselves. Currently, this feature is available in Microsoft's Frontier pilot program, with a broader rollout for regular Microsoft 365 subscribers on the horizon.

With Copilot Code, users can develop applications and tools across various platforms, including Windows, Mac, and via the web version. The tool is designed to simplify the development process by allowing users to express their ideas in natural language. The functionality supports the creation of dashboards, internal tools, static websites, and data automations. Users can also upload files such as CSVs and images, which serve as the basis for their projects.

In addition to the functionality of Copilot Code, this tool can leverage context within Microsoft 365, such as documents and emails, to provide even more relevant solutions. Users can also link their GitHub accounts for access to existing repositories. However, the system requires permission for certain actions such as executing terminal commands or making external connections, ensuring extra layers of security within organizations.

For Dutch users, Copilot Code offers support through the usual Microsoft 365 environment. Currently, access is limited to organizations participating in the Frontier program. Microsoft has announced that a preview will be available later this year for users with a personal Microsoft account. It is still unclear when the feature will be generally available and what additional costs may be associated with it.
