Microsoft's Copilot gets enhanced with self-tasks in Windows
Microsoft has announced that Copilot in Windows will receive significantly more capabilities. With the latest features, the AI assistant can view files and recent activities on your PC, and even perform tasks, such as organizing files or troubleshooting, provided you give permission. These enhancements will be available for Copilot+ PCs in the coming months.
According to Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows, Microsoft is introducing three new local capabilities for Copilot. These include the ability to understand local context, perform local actions, and utilize local models that partly run on your own PC. For more intensive tasks, Copilot will switch to the cloud if necessary. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, emphasizes in a post that the use of these features will only occur with your permission.
The structure of Copilot consists of three components: Home, Code, and Autopilot, with the latter being a personal agent that performs tasks in the background. Microsoft has also introduced Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) to ensure that organizations retain control over which files and networks the AI agents can access. This makes the process safer and more transparent, allowing users to check which actions have been performed by the agents.
While the capabilities of Copilot are promising, there is some hesitance following previous incidents, such as with the Recall feature, which has been postponed for safety reasons. Microsoft is now emphasizing transparency and the importance of consent, which is essential for building trust with users. AI applications are already widespread in the Netherlands, but the exact timing of these new features and the requirements such as special hardware remain unknown. Microsoft also indicates that availability may vary by device and market.
