Mistral launches Large 4: Le Chonk as a European AI challenger
Mistral has announced the new AI model Large 4, also known as ‘Le Chonk’. This innovative model integrates both text and image processing and is immediately accessible via an API. In the last week of October, the organization plans to make the model weights public, enabling companies to run the model locally and make optimal use of its functionalities.
The company positions Large 4 as the European counterpart to existing AI models from the United States. Mistral claims that the model outperforms other open-source alternatives on combined performance tests and lists several specific applications, including cybersecurity, manufacturing, and financial analysis. While this seems like an impressive claim, it is important to note that these results have not been validated by independent entities.
What primarily distinguishes Large 4 is the number of parameters. With an impressive 1 trillion parameters, of which 49 billion are active, the model has the capability to analyze and solve complex issues. Mistral emphasizes that the model delivers excellent performance across various sectors, claiming that it can surpass some leading closed models in so-called visual grounding, meaning that the model can correctly associate descriptions with specific objects or locations in images.
For developers, it is now possible to integrate Large 4 directly via an API into their applications. The company also clarifies that the open weights, or model weights, will be released under conditions dependent on the license to be published. Furthermore, Mistral positions itself as a fully European initiative, with the intention of rolling out AI solutions from its own Mistral Cloud infrastructure. This seems to align with the broader strategy of the organization, focused on promoting collaboration and infrastructure within Europe.
