Mistral shifts course: control over own servers
The French AI company Mistral has changed its strategy and aims to gain more control over its own servers within Europe. This move is a direct response to growing concerns about data sovereignty and the costs of services that have so far been heavily dependent on large cloud providers. Mistral expects this change to improve operations, especially for European customers who need reliability and transparency in their data processing.
By opting for its own infrastructure, Mistral can prepare its data models for use on servers it manages itself, ensuring improved performance, security, and availability. This reduction in reliance on public cloud will particularly enhance latency for applications such as chat assistants and search functions. Well-known models such as Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B will thus have more stable and faster availability, which is attractive to developers looking for lightweight and customizable AI solutions.
Moreover, by reducing dependence on American cloud providers, Mistral aims to strengthen digital sovereignty in Europe. This offers Mistral's business customers better control over contracts, with clear agreements regarding data storage and export in compliance with European laws and regulations. The European AI regulation calls for clear documentation and risk management, and with its own servers, Mistral can more easily meet these requirements, which is especially important for government agencies and healthcare institutions subject to strict compliance rules.
Managing its own servers also enables Mistral to deal more effectively with costs and energy management, crucial factors in the current technology industry. The ability to control and optimize hardware based on its own needs will not only reduce operational costs but also ensure an environmentally responsible approach. This aligns with broader European ambitions of developing optimal digital infrastructure and could also have positive implications for the Dutch market, where government and educational institutions are placing increasing demands on EU hosting and clear processor agreements.
