Mistral raises €3 billion and aims to challenge American AI giants

The French start-up Mistral AI recently raised €3 billion to strengthen its position in the AI sector. The rise of Mistral comes at a time when European companies are striving for more independence from American tech giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, with attention to the specific requirements of the European AI regulation.

The funds will primarily be used for expanding Mistral's product line and building its own infrastructure, including investments in AI chips, data centers, and research. This enables Mistral to acquire a substantial competitive position in Europe and reduce the lag behind American companies. The company aims for better training and adaptation capabilities of language models, specifically targeted at regional languages and contexts, which is essential for business customers.
