Mistral raises €3 billion and aims to challenge American AI giants
The French start-up Mistral AI recently raised €3 billion to strengthen its position in the AI sector. With this investment, the company aims to accelerate the development of new language models and acquire additional computing power. The rise of Mistral comes at a time when European companies are striving for more independence from American tech giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, with attention to the specific requirements of the European AI regulation.
The funds will primarily be used for expanding Mistral's product line and building its own infrastructure, including investments in AI chips, data centers, and research. This enables Mistral to acquire a substantial competitive position in Europe and reduce the lag behind American companies. The company aims for better training and adaptation capabilities of language models, specifically targeted at regional languages and contexts, which is essential for business customers.
Mistral positions itself as an attractive choice for European companies, emphasizing compliance with local regulations and digital sovereignty. This aligns with broader European initiatives like EuroHPC, which focus on increasing computing power within the EU. For Dutch organizations facing strict compliance requirements, the ability to work with a localizing supplier is an important consideration in procurement and tenders, especially for sensitive data.
The company is adapting on two fronts: it offers both open and commercial models. Open models such as Mistral 7B allow users to use and adapt them freely, ideally fitting the stringent GDPR requirements. At the same time, Mistral is developing commercial products that guarantee higher accuracy and support. With the increased capital, Mistral can better invest in compliance and research, to gain the trust of European regulators and customers and meet the newly concerning requirements of the AI regulation.
