AI systems steal the show at AgroTechniek Holland

At the trade expo AgroTechniek Holland, which took place this week in Biddinghuizen and was organized by the industry association Fedecom, the focus was on innovative AI systems for both arable farming and livestock farming. Visitors could explore various applications aimed at saving labor and deploying resources more efficiently. Suppliers anticipate the European AI regulation and respond to labor market shortages.

The stands featured a remarkable combination of hardware and smart algorithms, where cameras, sensors, and data models control machines and provide advice. This targets precision work that reduces the use of fuel, fertilizers, and pesticides, with the goal of lowering costs and emissions. Major brands presented smart control techniques and data platforms specifically developed for agricultural applications, while start-ups demonstrated compact solutions that can be easily integrated into existing machines.

The demonstrations focused on precision applications using computer vision, which can analyze images and distinguish weeds from crops, thereby reducing pesticide use and minimizing damage to crops. In addition, task maps were presented, combining various data such as soil analyses and satellite images for optimal dosing per plot. Drones and sensors contribute to this data flow by conducting plant counting and soil moisture measurements.

An important topic was the European AI regulation, which is currently being rolled out in phases. For most agricultural applications, the classification is of limited risk, which brings along transparency requirements. It is crucial for farmers to ask questions about the terms of data sharing, ownership, and responsibilities. By encouraging pilot projects and data interoperability, such as with ISOBUS and Task-Controller, agricultural professionals can effectively benefit from these technologies without falling into legal or practical pitfalls.
