OpenAI launches digital assistant Dots

OpenAI launched the new digital assistant Dots during their annual developer day, DevDay, in San Francisco. This assistant focuses on performing background tasks without users needing to take active steps. Dots is currently only accessible to paying subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise, in response to similar initiatives such as Meta's Muse.

Each Dot operates from its own cloud computer with access to over 4,000 different applications, powered by OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model. Users can operate their assistant through a chat window or by calling their Dot. Furthermore, Dots can be integrated with popular communication tools such as Microsoft Teams and Slack. OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar has indicated that there are plans to make Dots available for regular consumers in the future.

In a conversation with journalists after his keynote, CEO Sam Altman emphasized that an IPO for OpenAI will only occur once better assurances about the safety of their models have been obtained. He did not provide a specific timeline but expressed concern about the potentially negative effects of prolonged delays. According to Altman, having trust in the safety claims is essential now that the capabilities of AI models are rapidly increasing.

The subscription for Dots costs $500 per month, offering users the highest limits and access to the Ultrafast mode, where GPT-6 Astra can respond faster. Additionally, OpenAI has reopened the $200 per month subscription with new usage limits. Weekly users of ChatGPT have risen from 1 billion in July to 1.2 billion currently, highlighting the growth and popularity of the platform.
