OpenAI introduces Dots: Always-on digital assistants

OpenAI has launched Dots, an innovative line of always-on agents that can autonomously take over running tasks and monitor projects. These agents utilize GPT-6.1 Astra and operate on their own cloud computer. This allows them to deliver faster results for recurring tasks and urgent jobs, and they automatically signal when attention is required.

Each Dot is capable of conducting research, analyzing data, and writing documents, thanks to the integration with Codex and over 4,000 applications. Users can communicate with their Dot via chat or voice in ChatGPT, as well as on platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, while maintaining context. Through a clear interface, users can easily switch between ongoing tasks and operate the agent via distinct windows.

The design of Dots is such that they can autonomously perform tasks in a proactive mode in the background, with built-in safety measures that ensure they cannot send or change sensitive data without permission. OpenAI is also introducing custom rules that determine how and when a Dot can act independently. The system offers a high degree of control and oversight, which is important for users working with confidential information.

The rollout of Dots is currently limited in Europe, starting for pro subscribers outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. Business Premium members can use Dots in all supported regions, and Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare customers can test a beta version. OpenAI includes the first Dot with each subscription and offers the option to purchase additional Dots, speed, or workload at an additional cost. Integration with Microsoft for the Agent 365 service is also in development, allowing these tools to have broader applications within companies.
