OpenAI introduces texting for ChatGPT Dot
OpenAI has announced that users of the proactive AI agent Dot can now send messages via iMessage or RCS. This feature allows you to give your dot a task or to follow up on something through text, photos, or voice messages. The dot provides proactive updates and informs users when there is relevant news. Currently, this feature is in beta and is only available for ChatGPT Pro users in the United States, which means that Dutch users do not have access for now.
Dot functions as a personal AI agent within the ChatGPT environment and can perform tasks and monitor information even after you have closed the tab. This interactive element is new, as in addition to the existing communication through the ChatGPT app and website, you can now also reach your dot via text messages. OpenAI developed this at the request of users, making it possible to communicate directly with your dot via text, photo, or voice messages.
To use the texting feature, you need to open your dot's profile in the ChatGPT app and select the 'Texting' option. It is also necessary to enable iMessage (for iPhone users) or RCS (for Android users) and verify your phone number. An important aspect of this feature is that the SMS conversation with your dot shares the same memory and plugins as in the app to maintain context. OpenAI has emphasized that this communication is secure and occurs solely between you and your dot, without access to other SMS conversations.
Currently, the texting feature is only available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. OpenAI does not mention any separate pricing for texting as this feature is integrated into the existing Pro subscription. OpenAI has not yet made announcements regarding the availability of this feature in other countries, such as the Netherlands or the EU. Details about support for the Dutch language and the status of the beta phase remain unclear. Additionally, there are other similar AI agents, such as Claude Duet from Anthropic, which are also being tested in the United States, but Dot offers unique possibilities by utilizing SMS messages.
