NVIDIA Earth-2 Open Models for Weather Forecasting

NVIDIA Earth-2 Open Models for Weather Forecasting

Weather forecasting is essential for various sectors such as energy, insurance, and transport. The new NVIDIA Earth-2 provides developers and researchers with access to open AI models and tools that they can customize to their specific data. These advanced technologies, running on NVIDIA hardware, support both global and detailed regional weather forecasts and environmental research.

One of the recent innovations within Earth-2 is the StormScope EU, a regional model that utilizes EUMETSAT satellite observations for short-term forecasts. This model can monitor evolving cloud conditions in real time across Europe, with updates every 10 minutes. At GTC Berlin, NVIDIA is demonstrating an interactive weather demo that uses the StormScope EU, allowing visitors to explore current forecasts without having to download large datasets.

Developers have the ability to combine different models from Earth-2 for specific regional needs. Examples include combining StormScope with CorrDiff for local details and customization for new applications, such as air quality modeling. The open-source platform NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo supports teams in training and configuring their models, enabling them to integrate proprietary data and expertise into regional solutions.

Organizations such as AXA and TotalEnergies are leveraging the capabilities of Earth-2. AXA is using the FourCastNet 3 model to study the risks of cyclones, and TotalEnergies is exploring the potential for solar energy forecasting based on StormScope. Another example is the University Research in Manchester, where the CorrDiff model has been tailored for air quality modeling, utilizing advanced supercomputer infrastructure.

Additionally, Space42 has developed the SARDiff4Height model that estimates surface heights from single radar images. All of this highlights the power and versatility of the NVIDIA Earth-2 models and tools, enabling innovative solutions for various environmental issues.
