Prime Minister Jetten Incorrect About AI Use on Social Media

On September 29, Prime Minister Rob Jetten misinformed the House of Representatives about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on his official social media channels. Jetten claimed that no AI was deployed, but research results from the Volkskrant, supported by the AI detector Pangram, indicate that five messages from the past six months have been recognized as written by AI. Language experts confirm these findings, with constitutional law expert Wim Voermans noting that Jetten "is caught with his fingers in the door."

This revelation adds to previous reports that already indicated that Jetten and his party D66 had AI generate hundreds of social media messages since June 2025. Jetten initially distinguished between his private and official channels and claimed that no AI was used on his official accounts. However, the discovery that multiple messages, averaging 200 words long, were indeed produced by AI puts this claim under scrutiny.

The Government Information Service (RVD), responsible for the Prime Minister's communication, does not deny that AI was used. However, they assert that not every message is required to contain a notification of AI use as long as there has been human oversight of the texts. Jetten has stated that he personally always checks and adjusts the generated content. Nevertheless, the reliability of AI detectors, including Pangram, has been examined in independent research and this detector has been shown to perform significantly better than its competitors.

Politically, providing incorrect information is a serious accusation and can have severe consequences. There is also an emphasis on the government's responsibility in the use of generative AI. The upcoming European AI legislation requires that AI systems be clearly marked. This may reduce future confusion about AI use in public communications, although the question of the effectiveness of these measures remains. The situation surrounding Jetten is therefore not only important for the Prime Minister himself but also for the broader discussion about transparency and accountability in the use of AI.
