Critical call from 42 Royal Society fellows about AI
In an open letter to the president of the Royal Society, 42 fellows, including renowned mathematicians such as Fields medal winners, have warned of significant risks associated with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). The signatories, who have no ties to AI companies, advocate for immediate actions from both the UK government and the media to raise awareness of these risks. They are particularly concerned about the speed and scale at which AI systems are developing their capabilities.
The fellows not only refer to recent mathematical breakthroughs, where AI models have proven capable of solving large open research questions, such as some of the Millennium problems. Their warning primarily relates to the broader implications of this technological progress for other risky domains, such as cybersecurity, weapon technology, and the development of biologically or chemically hazardous substances. The corresponding concerns relate to the potential impact that similar advancements in those areas could generate.
Moreover, the fellows make it clear that estimates from AI labs suggesting that the existential risk of AI is above ten percent should not be regarded as overcome hype. They seek to emphasize the urgent need for policymakers to take these risks seriously before the public becomes aware of them. The call for swift action and public awareness is therefore crucial, as the time to respond adequately may be limited.
The letter from these fellows highlights the necessity for an active dialogue about the dangers of AI, especially in terms of technology and safety. The potential for accidents and the consequences of premature actions are cited as major concerns. The appeal to the Royal Society to intervene with the government and media aims to accelerate the discussion surrounding this issue, with the goal of preparing society legally for the implications of increasingly powerful technology.
