Impact of Ukrainian Drone Attacks on Troll Armies
Recent drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian data centers initially seemed to deal a blow to the troll armies in Russia. There was an impression on social media that these groups had been temporarily disabled. However, an analysis by internet company Cloudflare, combined with additional research from experts, shows that the troll armies are still operational and continue their activities.
Despite the assumptions that the bombings would have a significant impact on the online PR capabilities for spreading disinformation, the troll armies have unfortunately not disappeared. Cloudflare's analysis highlights that the infrastructure of these armies is not only robust but also well able to adapt to changing circumstances.
The necessity to develop an effective strategy against disinformation remains high. It repeatedly becomes clear that simply bombing away infrastructure does not always lead to the intended effect of disabling troll armies. This leaves room for reflection on the approach to digital warfare and the ongoing need for refinement in methods against online influence.
