Government expects 28 gigawatts of battery storage by 2040
This week, the government presented the renewed National Energy Plan (NPE), which includes significant adjustments to previous plans. This new plan addresses current developments surrounding the energy transition. A notable aspect is the high ambition in energy storage, with the government aiming for a capacity of no less than 28 gigawatts of battery storage by 2040.
The emphasis on battery storage is logical, given the increasing necessity to capture the fluctuations of sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar power. The NPE focuses on strengthening infrastructure and investing in technologies that can effectively manage the storage of generated energy. Besides contributing to the stability of the grid, battery storage will also help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The plans aim to stimulate innovations in storage technology, which will be essential for achieving climate objectives. With the expected growth in battery capacity, the government wants to ensure that there is sufficient energy available at peak demand times. This will not only improve energy supply but also increase opportunities for the development of new applications in the sector.
By presenting these ambitious plans, the government shows that it is determined to make progress in the energy transition. However, achieving 28 gigawatts of battery storage will bring complex challenges, from technological innovations to the role of regulations and market mechanisms that need to be further developed.
