D66 and AI: New Boundaries in Political Communication
Rob Jetten and the political party D66 have recently had hundreds of social media posts generated by artificial intelligence. This approach, implemented during recent campaigns in the Netherlands, aims to accelerate production and maintain message consistency. However, the choice to use AI raises important questions about transparency and the necessary regulations for political communication within the European Union.
D66 used generative AI tools, likely similar to ChatGPT or Gemini, to create texts for platforms like Instagram, X, and Facebook. This saves time and allows for testing various versions of the same message. Still, it remains unclear which specific AI tool was used, which may cause confusion among followers regarding the source of the content.
The recent developments surrounding the European AI regulation and the rules for political advertising do provide some direction, but currently lack clarity for textual messages. Although the Digital Services Act obliges platforms to be more transparent, labeling AI-generated texts in organic posts remains a grey area. Political parties are advised to be transparent about their use of AI to maintain voter trust, especially since AI-generated posts may carry risks of inaccuracies and undermine the sense of authenticity.
In the future, it is expected that more political parties in Europe will use AI in their communications. This requires clear guidelines and safeguards for both the technological and ethical aspects of AI usage. Parties investing now in verifiable processes, such as human editing and transparent communication, can not only reduce legal and reputational risks but also strengthen public trust in their messages.
