Comparison of energy consumption AI and gaming
Recent research shows that an hour of gaming on a powerful PC consumes the same amount of energy as asking 1,000 to 2,300 simple questions to an AI chatbot. This raises questions about the efficiency of both activities in terms of energy consumption. Compared to a normal work hour on a laptop, which can represent about 100 to 170 questions to an AI, the figures seem not to fully reflect the impact of AI technology and gaming.
Lieven Eeckhout, professor of computer architecture at Ghent University, explains that comparing the energy consumption of these technologies is more complex than it seems. The context in which both gaming and AI-based applications are used has a significant influence on their energy consumption. For instance, hardware requirements and the type of games or AI tasks can affect the energy costs.
Moreover, the various arithmetic operations that generate images during a gaming session accelerate energy consumption, while the computational intensity of AI applications also fluctuates depending on the complexity of the task. It is crucial for IT decision-makers and CIOs to be aware of these variations when considering their technological choices and the sustainability of those choices in their strategies.
The discussion about the energy consumption of technologies such as AI and gaming extends beyond just the figures. It requires a holistic view of how these technologies are deployed in daily operations and what long-term impact they have on sustainability. This requires companies to develop strategies to not only optimize their energy consumption but also to integrate sustainability into their technological adoption.
