AI and Negotiations: A New Challenge
In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), the biggest challenge lies not in the intelligence of a single AI, but in the interaction between millions of AI systems. Nick Jennings, AI researcher and vice-chancellor at Loughborough University, explains in an opinion piece in The Conversation that this question becomes crucial as AIs increasingly engage in conversation with one another.
Jennings points to the necessity of creating rules and structures for these so-called 'artificial societies'. In cases where AI systems must negotiate on behalf of their users, such as with banks, clear guidelines are essential. This not only prevents misunderstandings, but can also help promote fair and transparent interactions between different AI applications.
Furthermore, he emphasizes that developing a legal and ethical basis for these interactions is of great importance. When we allow AI systems to negotiate independently, the consequences are not only technological but also socio-economic. This raises questions about responsibility and the impact of decentralized decision-making by AI on society as a whole.
The rise of AI that collaborates and negotiates, such as in financial institutions, calls for a reconsideration of how these technologies are managed and integrated into existing systems. It is crucial that both ethicists and technologists come together to establish the framework that allows AIs to operate safely and effectively in society.
