YouTube Music starts labeling AI-generated music: here's how to see if a song was made with AI
YouTube Music introduces a new label for songs that are primarily created with generative AI. These labels will be visible in the music player and will later also be available in the standard YouTube app. The goal is to provide listeners with more clarity regarding the role of AI in the music they consume. YouTube will begin rolling out this system starting October 14, 2026.
Music labels and distributors will be responsible for indicating how much AI has been integrated into a song. They can choose from three designations: fully generative AI, partially generative AI, or no generative AI. For examples of these categorizations, YouTube refers to their official Dutch help page.
In addition to the information provided by music labels, YouTube also uses its own detection software to identify AI in music. This allows the platform to label songs as AI-generated even without information from a label. This is part of their effort to create transparency, although details about the strictness of this detection have not yet been released.
Despite the label, music produced with AI will not be removed from the platform, maintaining its potential to generate revenue. This contrasts with other music services like Deezer and Spotify, which enforce stricter measures regarding AI music. However, listeners specifically looking for songs without AI influence must still stay informed themselves, as YouTube currently does not offer an option to completely exclude AI music.
